7 Tips for Good Feng Shui

Posted April 29, 2014 in Tips

Spring is the perfect time to implement green principles in your home and employ good feng shui- the ancient art of placement for balance and harmony, is considered both an art and a science. Not only does feng shui help with creating beautiful design and flow in spaces, but also people often see major life shifts through its practice.

The health and beauty of your home is inextricably linked to the surrounding well-being of the planet and energy that surrounds it. Becoming eco-conscious is about creating a positive flow of energy on earth. As you take from the earth, you give back. Since your individual actions have a global impact, incorporating green ideology into your home can positively affect your health, your family and future generations.

It’s easy to become more eco-friendly in terms of what you buy, use, and do on a daily basis. Simply paying attention to using sustainable and nontoxic materials, conserving energy, relying more heavily on natural resources, reducing waste, and recycling usable items can make a big difference.

There are many good reasons to go green. You’ll save money on electricity and water bills. You’ll breathe cleaner air, produce less waste, and feel good about supporting local farmers and craftsman who are passionate about their products. Remember, handmade objects and foods are excellent feng shui since the positive energy of the artist or grower saturates the object.

Eco feng shui helps you create a home that boosts your energy, instead of depleting it.

Below are seven tips to get you started!

1. Start at the Front

The entrance to your house sets the tone for the welcoming opportunities into your life. Make it clean, neat and beautiful. As you open your front door you should feel happy. Keep it free from clutter such as shoes, coats, mail, and books.

2. Let in the Light

By Opening your windows for natural daylight you provide cross ventilation, allowing your home to warm and cool itself naturally.

3. Bring in plants

Live plants increase the oxygen, clean the air and create harmony. They also keep you connected to the world around you.

4. Remove clutter

Too many things are overwhelming because it’s simply too much energy. Clutter can be too much furniture, too many clothes, too many knick knacks…focus on the fact that it’s just too much. The most dramatic makeovers are often those that remove half of what’s originally in the room. Then only carefully chosen items make it back in. The result is a place with room for your eyes to rest and really enjoy.

5. Keep it Natural

Use sustainable materials such as bamboo, cork, hardwood and natural fiber carpet flooring, recycle and repurpose. You can clean your environment by minimizing toxins and choosing products that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that can cause headaches, dizziness, respiratory problems and other allergic reactions. It’s also important to buy nontoxic and organic household cleaners for the same reason.

6. Choose Function Over Form

Every professional interior design consultant will start with how the room is used by guiding you to select pieces that not only go with your space but also function well. Unused spaces can reflect parts of your life that are also feeling under-appreciated, so this is clearly in alignment with Feng Shui principles.

7. In With the New

While it is great to repurpose, sometimes you need a fresh start. Old tattered furniture that can’t be repaired, renewed or repurposed needs to be replaced. You will feel rejuvenated in a room full of beautiful inspiration that will help you re-energize your life. Your energy will be infused into each new item.

Creating good Feng shui in an eco-friendly way is good for you and the planet!
