Treat Your Furniture with TLC

REFRESH

It’s finally here. Spring. Time to open our windows, roll up our sleeves and refresh our homes with a good spring cleaning. We will be cleaning out closets, scrubbing floors and putting a fresh coat of paint on walls and woodwork that show winter’s wear and tear. Our furniture is craving some tender loving care too. Here are some tips to keep your furniture looking like new.

WOOD

For wood furniture we recommend a regular cleaning by dusting with a clean, soft lint-free cloth, feather duster or swiffer. Now is the time to clean a little deeper using a mild detergent, like Murphy’s Oil soap, mixed with water. Dampen a soft, clean cloth and lightly rub the wood surface. Rub going in the direction of the grain. Again, using a clean, soft cloth, dry the wood surface thoroughly. Do not use silicone cleaners and waxes as they may cause a chemical reaction which may harm the finish.

LEATHER

Leather furniture appreciates cleaning by vacuuming in crevices and wiping down with a damp, clean white cloth. As with wood, avoid solvents and domestic cleaners as this too may cause a chemical reaction resulting in damaging the leather. A leather conditioner, like Guardsman, may be applied to help protect the leather and maintain its beauty.

SPRING CLEANING

Now is a good time to thoroughly vacuum your upholstery, remove the cushions and clean all the nooks and crannies. Rotate and flip seat and back cushions. This is all you may need to bring that “like-new” look back to your furniture. For stains and areas where dirt is present we recommend checking the cleaning code. “W” can be cleaned with a water-based shampoo or upholstery cleaner. Code “S” requires a water-free solvent. If your fabric is a code “X” vacuum or brush lightly to remove soil. Always pretest any cleaner you will be using in an inconspicuous area before using. For stains remember to clean from the outside working your way to the center of the stain. This will prevent spreading it.

Happy Spring!
